A family of imaginary microscopes

Created as hands-on devices for young visitors, these objects invite people to observe invented specimens, impossible fossils and playful details that spark curiosity.

Each prototype was developed using simple materials, 3D-printed components and interchangeable viewing discs. Every piece is meant to be touched, rotated and explored—turning the act of “studying” something into a small game. These microscopes don’t reveal facts; they reveal possibilities.

The project began with the idea of creating instruments that looked scientific but behaved like toys. Their exaggerated lenses, coloured surfaces and mechanical gestures help visitors understand that science begins with observation, play and curiosity.

Every component has been simplified to make the experience tactile, intuitive and visually striking. Take a look!

The final set includes several “microscopes,” each offering a different way of looking: rotating lenses, pull-and-turn handles, layered images and translucent colours that shift with the light. They are built to withstand heavy use in a museum environment while remaining playful and inviting.
